Planning for the 125th Anniversary

Hopefully you all know by now that the weekend of April 27-29 is going to be a special weekend in the life of Central Baptist Church, as we will be gathering to celebrate 125 years of God’s faithfulness to our congregation, and to look ahead to the next season of life for our church. I wanted to take this opportunity to outline the plans for the weekend and to invite all of you to join us for this important event in the life of church. The schedule for the anniversary weekend itself will look like this: The weekend will begin on Friday the 27th at 7pm as we gather for a time of prayer and praise. There could be no better way to begin our celebration together than to focus our hearts on the Lord. We will gather in the sanctuary to sing together and be led in a time of guided prayer of thanksgiving for the past and praying for God’s guidance for the future. Then, on Saturday night the 28th we will gather together at Central for a good old fashioned Baptist potluck! For those who regularly attend Central, there will be an opportunity to sign up to bring a dish to the potluck at church in late March/early April. If you are coming from out of town, there is no need to bring a dish; you can just plan on coming and eating a feast of celebration! On this night there will be a program that will enable us to reflect back on God’s work in the life of our church, and will also include the launch of a capital campaign that fits in with the future planning that we are doing as a church. Finally, on Sunday the 29th we will come together for a Sunday Service of worship. On that morning there will be no Sunday School classes. Instead, at 9:15 there will be a time for fellowship that will include a continental breakfast. Then, at 10:30 we will enter the sanctuary for a special worship service that will cap off our weekend (note: there will be childcare for children ages 0-5 during the worship service. In the weeks leading up to the anniversary celebration, we are asking your participation in a couple of ways. First, we would like to create a historical display that will be in the church on that weekend. To do so, the staff has started to gather historical items from around the church. But we would also like to ask for your help in bringing us pictures or other items we could display. If you have something you would like to contribute, please bring it on a Sunday morning in the next few weeks, or drop it off to Grace in the office. Second, to make this anniversary we will be creating a special collage made of strips of colored fabric. Different color strips will represent different ways of being connected to Central. When they are all wound together this mural of color will show the many ways that many people have contributed to the life of our church over the decades. This may sound a bit odd right now, and I don’t have the space to fully explain it here, but keep your eyes open for it in the lobby on Sunday mornings in April and plan to contribute your fabric to the collage of CBC. And, if you are coming from out of town for the anniversary weekend, you will be able to participate on that weekend. Hopefully that whets your appetite for what is to come. Please plan on coming and being a part of this special weekend. We have much to be thankful for and much to look forward to as we seek God together as a church. Pastor Joel
