Friday Devotion (Remember to Give Thanks)
Just like the day following Christmas or Easter, so too we forget too quickly the emphasis and meaning to yesterday’s holiday that we set aside to celebrate each year—Thanksgiving.
For days, maybe even weeks, we have been more so planning our day AFTER Thanksgiving rather than our day OF Thanksgiving. And why not! On Thursday, so many of us celebrated in such seclusion & by ourselves that the next day—BLACK FRIDAY—certainly would have been more eventful than the national day of thanks. We can be out and about. We can see and be around lots of other people.
There’ll be sounds & voices, color and activity. Thanksgiving almost pales in comparison to Black Friday.
Already, all day and all week, ads have been hitting our text, e-mail & snail mail, social media pages, television and more. The onslaught of Black Friday propels us right into the Christmas season like nothing else. So, even though the great day has arrived, looming over us with promises of great savings & wonderful deals, might we pause a moment on this Black Friday to have one more tiny sense of Thanksgiving?
The psalmist proclaims our needed response to God satisfying our every need “Let them (us) give THANKS to the LORD for His unfailing love and His wonderful deeds for mankind, for He satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.” (Ps. 107:8-9). And Paul commands the small house church in north-central Greece that they can always find something to be thankful for, even in the hard times: “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in ALL circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” (1 Thess. 5:16-18)
I’m glad we have bookmarks in our calendar to help us remember to give praise, to pause & remember…to give thanks. Let’s not pass by these days, these times, too quickly. No matter what our world is filled with, let us always take time to remember Who holds the days of our lives and because of the certainty that we have in His track record & trustworthiness, we take time to give Him Thanks. This not only honors Him but just as importantly it rightfully puts our relationship to Him in perspective.
Find a moment, right now, and thank God for something in your life.
